It has been installed in Chevrolet trucks, Corvettes and Novas, just to name a few.The first Chevrolet 350 was installed in the 1967 Camaro. The 350 has become well known among Chevrolet enthusiasts. They have been known to last past 250,000 miles before needing to be rebuilt. Difficulty:Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Engine stand Ratchet Complete socket set Torque wrench Cam bearing tool Freeze plug tool Piston ring compressor Piston ring pliers Rubber mallet Standard mallet Main bearings Piston connecting rod bearings Cam bearings Freeze plugs Cam plug Complete gasket kit RTV sealant Plastigauge Assembly lube (50/50 mix of ATF and STP works well) Seal glideRebuild a Chevrolet 350. Step by Step : 1 Disassemble the engine. Inspect the pistons for scoring and cracks. Take the engine block, crankshaft and cylinder heads to a reputable machine shop. The machine shop will clean the engine components and check for any defects. Once the machine shop returns the engine, place it on the engine stand. 2 Rotate the engine block, intake side down, oil pan side up. Cam bearings are stepped down in size from front to back. Install the rear cam bearing first, then work up to the front, using the cam bearing tool. Using a freeze plug tool, install the freeze plugs. There are eight of them in total. Also install the cam plug, which is the largest freeze plug in the set. 3 Coat the cam journals and lobes with a liberal amount of assembly lube. Carefully install the camshaft into the engine block. After passing the third journal of the camshaft, reach through the bottom of the block to steady the component. Guide the camshaft with one hand, while pushing it into place with the other. 4 Install the rear main seal and apply seal glide. Place the crankshaft journal bearings in their saddles. Apply a liberal amount of assembly lube and set the crankshaft onto the bearings. Place bearings into the main caps. Apply assembly lube, and install the main caps. Using the plastic collar, install the oiling shaft on the oil pump. Install the oil pump on the last rear main cap; it utilizes one bolt. Torque bolts to specifications using a torque wrench. Rotate the engine to the intake side up position. 5 Install the oil wiper in the lower groove on the piston. With the piston ring pliers, gap the rings and place them in the ring grooves of the piston. Compress the rings using the ring compressor. Gently tap the piston into the cylinder with the rubber mallet. Apply assembly lube and install the connecting rod bearing onto the rod. Put the rod cap bearing into place. Apply assembly lube and install the rod cap. Repeat for the other seven pistons. Rotate the engine to the intake side down position. Using the torque wrench, tighten the rod caps to specifications. 6 Install the timing gears, timing chain, timing cover with gasket and new front crank seal. The crankshaft timing gear is a keyed, pushed-on gear. Place the oil pan gasket on the engine block. Apply a dime size amount of RTV sealant to each corner of the oil pan gasket to prevent leakage. Put the oil pan into place and install the bolts. 7 Roll the motor back to the intake side up position. Apply assembly lube around each lifter and install the lifters into the block. Install the head gaskets. Place a head onto the engine block, and tighten the bolts in a circular pattern, starting from the middle and working outward. Place the push rods in each guide, onto the lifters. Place the rocker arms over the push rods using assembly lube on all three contact points. Set valve lash. Repeat for the other head. 8 Apply a 1/4-inch thick line of RTV sealant to the front and back of the engine block, where the intake manifold will sit. Place the intake gaskets onto the cylinder heads. Carefully place the intake manifold on top of the engine block. Tighten the intake bolts in a circular pattern from the center moving outward. Tips & Warnings Be sure that the piston ring gaps are opposite of one another. Make sure all mating/sealing surfaces are clean from debris and oil. Use a can of brake clean and a shop rag to wipe off residue from the surfaces. The use of plastigauge is helpful to confirm proper clearance of the bearings. It's best to check the torque of each bolt at least twice. Find torque specs in the references. If you do not use the proper assembly lubricant, the bearings can be severely damaged. It's a good idea to use compressed air to blow through the crankshaft oil galleys and the oil galleys on the block to ensure that they are free of blockage. For a quick rebuild of stock cylinder heads in good condition, the only tools required are those of the assembly/disassembly ilk. However, if more extensive modifications are desired, either for performance or repair, any procedure will go smoother and result in a higher-quality end product if the re-builder has the right tools for the job. Assembly/Disassembly Tools The most basic tools required for cylinder head work are the ratchets and wrenches needed to remove the head from the block and the rocker arms and valve cover from the head. Valve-spring compressors come in two varieties: lever-types and screw-types. The lever-types resemble a crow bar and are easier to use, but cannot be employed on many head types. Screw-types can be used on practically any valve-spring, but require a bit more patience and skill to use. Measurement Tools Inside/Outside measurement dial calipers are the most basic and versatile measurement tool required and will serve most needs involved. A height gauge works the same as a dial caliper and allows the user to measure things like open and installed spring height and valve-guide height. For porting purposes, an inside-diameter snap gauge is helpful in determining port dimensions, and its spring-loaded construction helps the porter to discover diameter variances quickly. Valve Guide Machining A varieties of drill-based tolls are available for machining and finishing valve-guides. Core drilling and reaming combos are available for all types of valve guides including bronze and cast iron. These reamers are generally either carbide or titanium nitride coated, which covers practically any type of valve-guide available. Guide resizing kits include re-size arbors (knurlers) and a variety of reamers for achieving the proper valve clearance for most engines. Guide liner installation kits include everything needed to bore, install, size, trim and finish your valve guides. However, considering the cost of these kits, it may be far less expensive to simply have a machine shop do the work for you. Other Machining Tools Many types of valve seat cutters are available for resurfacing these crucial mating surfaces. Three-angle seat grinders cost about the same as any other variety, so these are general preferred over single-angle types. Better valve-seat systems (such as the Neway) use multiple components to allow the versatility required in professional shops. A wide assortment of seat grinders and valve seal tools are available for those who need to modify their heads for greater travel or a different type of seal. Performance Tools Though many of the tools required for cylinder head porting are used in other aspects of the rebuilding process (like seat cutters, height gauges, dial calipers and snap gauges), few are more specialized or dangerous than porting stones. Comprehensive kits include both at least three mandrel lengths, and the three basic porting mediums: Carbide bits, stone bits and cartridge rolls. High-speed die grinders of either the electric or air variety are acceptable, but the cool-running comfort of an air system is preferred by most.
